‘You are what you digest’: Experts share key points to improve digestion

Your gut health is important for maintaining overall health as healthy digestion keeps many diseases at bay. Food, when not digested well, can lead to issues such as bloating, nausea, mood swings and an overall drop in immunity, which can compromise your health and fitness. As such, for the smooth functioning of your digestive system, you must make some lifestyle and diet changes.

According to Ayurvedic expert Dr Nitika Kohli, the simplest way to harness the full potential of what you eat is to make sure you digest it properly. “While what you eat is important, how you digest what you eat is more important! In Ayurveda, we say: You are what you digest and not what you eat.

She explained, “When you eat foods that you digest well, your body is able to draw nutrients from them better, which, in turn, provide good quality blood to irrigate your vital organs. – resulting in overall ease and well-being.”

According to Dr. Kohli, here are some key points to improve your digestion.

Daily Exercise

The expert advised to exercise every day for good digestion. “Exercise that makes you sweat a little, that gets your heart moving and your lungs work, will actually improve your digestion.”
